   Aphekom releases project's findings

The findings of nearly 3 years of our work show that life expectancy and monetary benefits increase significantly when levels of fine particles are reduced further in European cities. They reveal that living near busy roads substantially increases the total burden of disease attributable to air pollution. And they underscore the benefits from regulating pollution near busy roads beyond the achievements of current EU legislation.

   Final Stakeholders Meeting

Hosted by the project’s coordinator, Institut de Veille Sanitaire (French Institute for Public Health Surveillance), this meeting brought Aphekom scientists together with policy makers, other scientists and representatives of international organisations and NGOs from across Europe to discuss Aphekom’s findings and a wide range of issues concerning urban air pollution and health in Europe.

Four-month no-cost  extension of the Aphekom project

Initially planned to last two and a half years and end on 30th November 2010, the Aphekom project has now been extended until 31st March 2011. The European Commission’s Executive Agency for Health and Consumers (EAHC) granted this four-month no-cost extension in response to the project's request earlier in 2010.

The extension will give Aphekom's scientific Work Packages (WPs) the additional time needed to exploit their findings to the fullest, and subsequently enable the cross-sectional WPs to make the best use of these scientific findings when communicating and disseminating Aphekom's work.

As part of the communication and dissemination efforts during the no-cost extension, Aphekom has scheduled a conference for early March 2011 in Paris to share the main findings and learnings of the project with key stakeholders.
